Here’s an opportunity to visit the historical sites of Florence in the comfort of an air conditioned minivan. You can choose to do a little walking or none at all, it’s up to you. It’s an ideal tour for those with walking difficulties. Then later in the day it’s off to Tuscany and the the Chianti region to enjoy wine tasting. Your guide will be my partner Maurizio Bellini a local born “boy” who is a qualified guide and highly knowledgeable on all things Florentine, academic and otherwise.

Maurizio who is the guide for our Florence guided tour and wine tasting

Your Florence guided tour

The day begins with drive up Michelangelo Avenue towards to the terrace overlooking the city called Piazzale Michelangelo. Here we’ll take a short stop to admire the fabulous view, and take photo or two. We’ll learn when and why the terrace was built. Then we head back into town to discover the Oltrarno district (the other side of the river). This was the area where the artists had their workshops during the renaissance. Today it’s the local’s side of town, filled with small artisan stores and less touristy restaurants where the Florentines prefer to eat. However there is one very imposing building, namely the Pitti Palace, and Maurizio will explain its origins and how it is used today. We also drive past the world famous Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) and learn how the smelly butchers stores located on the bridge in medieval times were forced to relocate, giving it its present day status as a jewelry center.

We continue across the Arno river to the “opulent” side of town and we drive past the churches of Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, and Il Duomo with the gravity defying brick cupola and its intricately decorated bell tower. Here we’ll also see how many of the town’s luxurious medieval palaces, now house the big names in designer fashion. Maurizio will give you a short history of each site without “overload” as we leisurely drive by. We conclude our Florence tour in the cosmopolitan Piazza della Repubblica. Here we can stretch our legs and maybe enjoy a coffee in one of the world famous cafés.

Suitably refreshed we end our Florence guided tour and around mid day head towards the Chianti region and the Tuscan countryside, where Maurizio will suggest a lovely but inexpensive venue for lunch (not included in fee). We follow lunch with an enjoyable drive through the iconic countryside, and make a stop or two for our holiday photos.

Last but certainly not least, we’ll of course savor a sit down wine tasting at one of the best wineries from my Wine Enthusiast’s Tour. You will taste Chianti, Chianti Reserve and Super Tuscan wines. Pick up is 09:15 and drop off about 05:15
